Our regular reading and spelling work patterns apply this week and the tests will be on Friday. In language, we are reviewing pronouns. Nothing written is necessary (or allowed) as I simply want the students to repeat a few things they learned about their person through their research. A simple prop (an item, book or photograph) is also required. In math, we are studying tessellations, decimals, sales tax and multiplication patterns. Friday is the test day this week. In social studies, we are reviewing Unit 2 lessons 3-6. The test is Tuesday. The students opened their businesses last Friday. A great time was had by all, and many lessons were learned about how pricing and original product ideas affect sales. A look ahead to next Tuesday's Valentine's Day- we will have a treat and an opportunity to share valentines. Marty's dishonesty is discovered and his choices lead to an accident involving Shiloh. Our regular spelling and reading work patterns apply this week and the tests will be on Friday. The review questions for the week do not need to be turned in- they are a guide that we complete and discuss in class as a model of good answers. In language, we continue with the personal narrative. The first draft is due this Friday. It may be hand written (printed or cursive) and does not need to be edited- I will check it for correct form and we will edit next week! In math, we are reviewing concepts of place value and addition and subtraction. Our new math series gives tests every 5 lessons so Tuesday will bring Power Up (testing the concepts practiced in our daily math morning work of basic facts and problem solving) and Cumulative (covering the concepts in our daily math lessons) tests. These chapters deal with Marty choosing to keep and hide Shiloh after he runs away for a second time from his owner that mistreats him. We will discuss an important morality issue: is it okay to do something wrong for a right reason? With the short week our work pattern will be definitions due Wed., 2-sided spelling page due Thursday, and 3x each and the reading and spelling tests on Friday. In language, we will begin writing the personal narrative. Look for an information sheet with due dates to come home on Wednesday. Please sign and return this by Friday. In math, we will practice adding, subtracting and word problems with and without missing numbers. In social studies, we are reviewing the world's 7 continents and 5 oceans. This will be quizzed on Thursday. Last Friday was our first mini economy pay day and class store shopping opportunity. Students had to choose between spending or saving for a larger item in the future. The student filled out their money ledgers very nicely!
Important upcoming dates:
9/7- 9:45 all school mass in the church
9/8- continents quiz
9/9- Eucharistic Adoration, reading and spelling tests
9/10- Margaret's birthday

Week of August 29

This week in 4T we have begun reading the novel Shiloh. This is the story of an 11 year old West Virginia boy who finds a neglected dog he names Shiloh. Each week we will read 3-4 chapters in class and discuss them. The students will have spelling each night and vocabulary definitions due on Tuesday. We will practice answering story questions and model good, complete answers in question and answer form. The reading and spelling tests will be on Friday. Students have also begun taking AR tests so feel free to check their test record sheet in their expandable folder to check on your child's progress. In social studies, we will begin reviewing map skills in the textbook. Also, Friday is our first payday which means students may also shop at our class store for our mini economy. In math, the students will be taking tests this week over the material covered in the first 5 lessons (place value and number patterns). My hope is that the new homework form (page with the boxes) is helping the class complete their week neatly and well!
Important upcoming dates:
8/31- 9:45 all school mass
9/1- math Power Up and Cumulative tests
9/2- Shiloh chaps 1-3 reading and spelling tests
9/4- Sydney R.'s birthday
9/5- No School (Labor Day)

Week of August 22

This is our first full week in 4T! Tuesday is Back to School Night at 7:00. I look forward to seeing you all and helping you learn about our classroom. In reading this week the students are in groups each reading a chapter from Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing. The groups will outline the story elements (characters, setting, problem and solution) on a poster and present their chapter to the class at the end of the week. There will be no reading test this week and the spelling test is on Friday. In language, we are reviewing sentences and paragraph writing. The students will write a "cheeseburger" paragraph (comparing the sentences of a paragraph to the elements of a cheeseburger). In math, we have a new series. Saxon math builds its curriculum by scaffolding ideas to be practiced throughout the school year instead of in a chapter and not seen again. I will explain more about this program on Tuesday night. In social studies, we are learning important facts about the state of Indiana. The students are completing a "scavenger hunt," The answers to these questions can be found in a packet they were given, their textbook, and the internet. This is due on Wednesday. I have also introduced our class Mini Economy. Look for a letter explaining this program coming home on Monday. Finally, there is no all school mass on Wednesday.
Important upcoming dates:
8/23- 7:00 Back to School Night
8/24- SS Scavenger Hunt due, NO all school mass

First day of school

What a great first day of fourth grade we had in 4T! Your children are wonderful. They listened well and organized their materials, desks, and lockers easily. If only every day could go as smoothly as today did! I sent home a lot of information today: a packet including a parent letter, discipline plan and homework policy and the Innisbrook fundraiser envelope. Please review all of this and sign and return the bottom portions of the discipline plan and homework policy by Friday. Feel free to call or email me with any questions at any time, but especially during this transition time into fourth grade!
Important information and reminders:
*fourth graders must wear a belt daily
*planners do not need to signed, but should be reviewed daily
*all school masses are Wednesdays at 9:45 am
